Billboard Quietly Removes Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' from the Hot Country Songs Chart &

What's up World!

Since late 2018, the single 'Old Town Road ' by Lil Nas X [Real Name: Montero Lamar Hill] has become a viral sensation originating from the "Yeehaw Challenge" via social media app Tik Tok. As a result the genre defying country rap song is reaching over 17 million viewers on Youtube. Born April 9th, 1999 the Atlanta native 's creativity has a sense of togetherness between diverse cultural backgrounds.

The moment a listener hears the banjo infused trap beat combined with Lil Nas X's deep southern twang, I bet they'll want a fly pair of cowboy boots and a durag. By early 2019, "Old Town Road" peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at #32, the Hot Country Songs chart at #19 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs at #36.

Check It Out Here:

Unfortunately, on or around March 28th, 2019 Billboard informed Lil Nas X and Columbia Records the artist's entry was a mistake and decided to quietly remove "Old Town Road" from its Hot Country Songs chart by releasing the following statement to Rolling Stone anonymously:

“upon further review, it was determined that ‘Old Town Road’ by Lil Nas X does not currently merit inclusion on Billboard‘s country charts. When determining genres, a few factors are examined, but first and foremost is musical composition.

While ‘Old Town Road’ incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.”

Currently, Billboard is getting the side eye for removing the surprise hit with speculations of a racist antics.

"Are Black artist not allowed in White space? Even though, Black culture is constantly being invaded?"

I must admit I conducted research to find if Billboard has taken similar action in the past. I found absolutely nothing. So why Lil Nas X? His hit record is heavily influenced by the country music genre only hinting at his hip hop background through the rhythmic drums. Secondly, Old Town Road's visual reenacts a Western gun scene. Super country.

Besides, I'm sure Billboard has accepted out of the box entries (i.e. Gangam Style) not matter how annoying or irreverent. It represents the culture during a particular timeframe. I wish Lil Nas X could have enjoyed the shine he deserved. Shame on Billboard for being so shady smh.
