#harMONiousMusicMondays: Kevin Gates- By Any Means 2

October 3, 2017

Hey,  what's up it's Monday and I'm loving this fall weather. On my way to work I like to listen to my Kevin Gates radio station on Pandora. While doing so, I fell in love with his latest mixtape, By Any Means 2, dropped September 21, 2017.

According to HipHopDx.com the Baton Rouge native was set for release in March 2017 but received an additional charge for a gun, adding 30 months to his sentencing. Even while incarcerated Gates delivers promising lyrics that hit past the superficial level. The tracklist for, By Any Means 2, is as followed:

  1. No Love

  2. McGyver

  3. Had To

  4. F****n Right

  5. Beautiful Scars (feat. PnB Rock)

  6. Attention

  7. GOMD

  8. D U Down

  9. What If

  10. Came Up

  11. Imagine That

  12. No Trust

  13. Jus Wanna

  14. Why I

I like to believe I have been a Kevin Gates fan for quite sometime. His bottled up passionate soul I believe is sometimes misconstrued as pure aggression. The heavy knocking bass lines continuously delivered could push this general idea even further. However, through his lyrics you can hear wisdom and insight gained from life experience. For example, Had To's hook features the idiom "Snakes in the Grass"- as Gates explains why he had to cut his own grass. Check out the mixtape here:

To continue:

Kevin Gates may not be the most gentle with words but by listening to his productions one can tell he has a big heart deep down. I feel this way because he never fails to add a few very well thought out romantically subtle slow jams to his art. This pattern is repeated with By Any Means 2 with songs F****n Right, Beautiful Scars (feat. PnB Rock), D U Down, and Jus Wanna. Initially these records could seem vulgar but upon further inspection the value of the lyrics are sincere.

F****n Right Lyrics

[Intro]
Bae stop playin', you know I'm lovin' you

[Verse 1]
I'm in denial (I'm in denial)
You must know somethin' I don't (you must know somethin' I don't)
Baby, you something serious (something serious)
As far as I know (as far as I know)
I go low, you hit high notes (I go low, you hit high notes)
From me, you can't hide though (baby, from me, you can't hide though)
That ass is from Houston (ass is from Houston)
But that mouth from Chicago (but that mouth from Chicago)

[Pre-Chorus]
Just tell me what you think of me
Baby, I'm not your enemy
I love your vibe and energy
I'm into you, you're into me
Got all these bitches stressin' me
All these bitches stressin' me
And I need you right here next to me
Next to me, yeah

[Chorus]
Fuckin' right, fuckin' right, that's some real shit
Take some time out your night, get some real dick
Young nigga, breadwinner, need a fly chick
Real nigga, like me, need a real bitch
Fuckin' right, fuckin' right, that's some real shit
Take some time out your night, get some real dick
Young nigga, breadwinner, need a fly chick
Real nigga, like me, need a real bitch

[Verse 2]
You got that body (you got that body)
Fuck what they tell you (baby, fuck what they tell you)
You say I make real moves (you say I make real moves)
Well I know the real you (girl, I know the real you)
Bae, you a raw bitch (bae, you a raw bitch)
And I can't deny you (I can't deny you)
Thank God I found you (thank God I found you)

[Pre-Chorus]
Just tell me what you think of me
Baby, I'm not your enemy
I love your vibe and energy
I'm into you, you're into me
Got all these bitches stressin' me
Got all these bitches stressin' me
And I need you right here next to me
Next to me, yeah

Maybe it's the hood in me that finds these words to be heavenly and romantic. I do believe it is a major compliment when someone loves your energy. As a fan I truly hope Kevin Gates calms down and focus his behavior in a more positive manner. His originality is a must in the music industry. Without artist such as himself we would be stuck with a bunch of 90's Moesha braids looking fools on the radio.

What we listen to and play on the radio is important because it influences those coming up after us. Hits such as I Don't Get Tired inspire greatness and hard work in our youth. Even more so it has a positive influence on our urban youth because it does not shy away from the truth. The truth of the struggle.

The struggle is what causes bottled up passion which leads to kicking an audience member in the face. The struggle can also contribute to Kevin Gates being misunderstood.

By Any Means is an impressive mixtape with a diverse sound. Not every song is my absolute favorite, but I could listen to the entire mixtape front to back without fast forwarding. My top tracks are F****n Right (Breadwinner, Need a Fly Chick), McGyver, and Attention.
